Notwithstanding recent political protests, my impression of Thailand is one of a primarily Buddhist country of gentle, courteous and smiling people (although the big cities have moved in the expected direction to a degree). The country is dotted with temples and farms, and every home and business has a picture (or pictures) of the King and queen. While Bangkok is urbane and cosmopolitan in places, magical vestiges of old Siam remain throughout the country, and captivate and inspire visitors. My strongest memory will be of a Buddhist monk blessing me, not with invocations of a god, but with a sprinkle of water, a smile and the admonition to "be happy".
